Konnectus recently had the opportunity to bench test a revolutionary product for the AV Industry called Zyper4K, manufactured by US based company ZeeVee. The product enables distribution of ultra-high definition, uncompressed video, audio and other data signals using off-the-shelf 10Gb Ethernet switching technology. This is revolutionary because it signifies an imminent end for the need to use large, expensive, proprietary, and often inflexible AV switching and signal distribution solutions. Canadian companyAptoVision have developed a unique and new chipset called BlueRiver NT, which is at the core to the Zyper4K product. There is a lot to like about the BlueRiver NT chipset and the Zyper4K products. The key plus is that the backbone of the AV system is now a 10Gb Ethernet network, rather than a mix match of different proprietary AV products made by different manufacturers that are not truly interoperable and standards based. Each endpoint of the system (source device or display) requires its own dedicated encoder or decoder to convert the AV signals into standard Ethernet packets. The new technology boasts: Uncompressed UltraHD (4K/30Hz at 4:4:4 colour space) video; Supports stereo and embedded audio channels up to 7.1 channels; 1GbE network port exposed on all encoders and decoders; Source and display control (Infrared and RS232); HDCP v1.x and v2.x compliant; API for system control (including 3rd Party)/monitoring; Secure, AES128 bit encryption. Replacing custom AV matrix switches with standard IP switches cuts the cost and size of such equipment by up to 60% while also eliminating the associated R&D cost, reducing time-to-market, and lowering inventory risk. The installation time required build a Zyper4K system is significantly lower than traditional proprietary AV systems due to its “plug and play� design, and use of IP technology, standards, and components. We tested the product thoroughly using a range of different input source devices and displays. The test system coped extremely well and we were very impressed with the switching speed, low latency, and high quality of video and audio transmitted. One minor criticism would be the provided user interface for configuring and monitoring the system. It is somewhat difficult and confusing to navigate but we would expect this to be improved with future firmware upgrades. It’s been talked about for years, but now AV and IT can truly be one system! The Zyper4K product is the first to market using the BlueRiver NT chipset and we expect other manufacturers to soon also be releasing similar offerings. Currently ZeeVee offers its solution in fiber only, but a copper based version is expected to be released to market later in 2015.
